Update on Spinal MRI

Update on Spinal MRI INTRODUCTION Huy M. Do, MD n this issue of Topics in Magnetic Resonance Imaging, we discuss the current state of IMagnetic Resonance (MR) imaging as well as share exciting developments in Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) and diffusion weighted imaging techniques for the spine and spinal cord. We begin with an excellent overview of the practical aspects of imaging of the spine by my esteemed colleague, Dr. Barton Lane. General considerations, commonly used MR sequences, and tailored protocols for imaging of the most frequent seen spine related dis- eases are discussed. Next, Drs. Pattany, Saraf-Lavi, and Bowen contribute their expertise in advanced MRA techniques for assessment of the spinal vasculature. Conventional and contrast- enhanced MR angiographic sequences are comprehensively reviewed followed by a discus- sion of basic spinal vascular anatomy, normal appearance and distinguishing characteristics of vascular diseases on MRA. Drs. Bammer and Fazekas write on the challenges of diffusion imaging of the human spine and spinal cord. They discuss an overview of the fundamentals of DWI of the spine and its potential pitfalls. The most commonly used DWI methods and evidence gathered from the latest experimental and clinical applications are addressed. I sincerely thank Andrea Allison-Williams of Lippincott Williams and Wilkins for her never-ending patience and guidance and Dr. Scott Atlas, my friend and mentor, for inviting me to guest edit this issue.
