Huang, MD, MBA,* and Chad Marcantonio ince the first publication of data using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in 1991 and the release S of the first commercially available OCT in 1995, OCT has been at the forefront of the clinical management of retina and macular diseases. Increased resolution, speed, and its noninvasive nature are major reasons why OCT imaging has outpaced fluorescein angiography (FA) and fundus imag- ing as the primary technology for macular and optic nerve imaging. The ability to detect anatomic alter- ations of 8 to 10 μm has made OCT the mainstay of virtually all clinical trials for retinal disease. The review article by Ruia et al is an excellent summary of previous research on the diagnostic find- ings of diabetic macular edema (DME) on OCT and its clinical relevance and posits the need for a stan- dardized methodology to categorize DME. The article reviews the historical perspective of the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Studies and illustrates that the descriptive features of focal and diffuse edema noted on clinical and angiographic examination are shifting http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology Wolters Kluwer Health
