Egbe, We thank Quail et al for their letter regarding our recent paper titled doppler- MBBS, MPH derived arterial load indices better reflect left ventricular afterload than sys- 1 2 tolic blood pressure in coarctation of aorta. Quail et al raised an important point regarding the determinants of left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with coarctation of aorta (COA) reported in their recent papers. In their study, nei- ther systolic blood pressure nor Doppler-derived arterial load indices such as total arterial compliance correlated with left ventricular mass index. A potential explanation for the difference in results may be related to differences in imag- ing modalities used in both studies. LV mass index and arterial load indices were assessed using echocardiography in our study while Quail et al measured these variables using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. While both modalities cor- relate well, it is unclear whether variables from the 2 imaging modalities can be used interchangeably in a risk model.
