RESEARCH ARTICLE Fabio Rotondo, BRT,* Bernd W. Scheithauer, MD,w Kalman Kovacs, MD, PhD,* and David C. Bell, MD* undertaken to explore the mechanisms underlying hor- 1–3 Abstract: Rab3B, a member of the Rab family is a low molecular mone release, details are not fully understood. Previous weight GTP-binding protein that has been implicated in the studies have shown that Rab3 proteins are necessary for regulation of exocytosis. To shed light on its presence in the the transportation of cellular products from endoplasmic normal human pituitary and in adenomas, a detailed immuno- reticulum to the Golgi apparatus and into secretory histochemical study of 130 surgically removed human pituitary vesicles. They are implicated in vesicle trafficking, adenomas was undertaken, including 23 somatotroph, 32 mediate membrane attachment, and are involved in lactotroph, 19 functional corticotroph, 10 silent subtype 1 and membrane fusion and thereby facilitating exocytosis. To 8 silent subtype 2 corticotroph adenomas, 12 gonadotroph date, more than 30 members of the Rab family have been hormone producing, 10 thyrotroph, 7 silent subtype 3 adeno- identified. Cloned from a brain-derived cDNA library, mas, and 9 null cell adenomas, 5 of the latter being of oncocytic they were detected in neural tissue and
