Pelvic sonography is indispensable for the noninvasive diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. However, there are numerous pitfalls that can interfere with proper interpretation of sonograms performed on patients at risk for ectopic pregnancy. The author illustrates and discusses many of these pitfalls in this article. A wareness of the difficulties that can be encountered should minimize the likelihood of erroneous interpretation of sonograms performed in women for whom the clinical presentation mandates that ectopic pregnancy be reliably confirmed or excluded.
