Philip W. Ralls, MD

Philip W. Ralls, MD IN MEMORIAM hilip W. Ralls, MD, a greatly admired and respected luminary in ultrasound, died sud- P denly at his home on September 23, 2012. Throughout his distinguished career, Phil held many leadership positions in radiology and was past president of the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, and editor-in-chief of Ultrasound Quarterly. He was an inter- nationally recognized thought leader in abdominal imaging and worked tirelessly to pro- mote ultrasound as a diagnostic modality. Phil was a renowned expert in hepatobiliary and pancreatic ultrasound, and through his numerous scholarly publications established many of the fundamental clinical precepts that led to our understanding of the role of ultrasound in cholecystitis, portal hypertension, liver abscesses, and pancreatic tumors, just to name a few. Phil was a true Southern Californian, and after graduating from UCLA Medical School, he spent his entire career in radiology, from residency onward, at the University of Southern California. Under his leadership, Phil developed a world-class ultrasound service at the LA County University of Southern California Medical Center. Phil was an iconic figure at LA County, and his diagnostic skills were legendary. No complicated patient’s abdominal workup was complete without Phil’s ultrasound assessment and in- sightful analysis. Last fall, the Graduate Society of the USC Radiology Alumni honored Phil at their annual meeting. I was indeed fortunate to be able to attend this meeting, as it truly was an uplifting experience to hear his numerous trainees and colleagues share on the podium their affectionate and humorous vignettes of Phil’s unique interpersonal style and sense of humor. Phil was a very devoted family man and a loving husband and father. He was enor- mously proud of his wife, Renee, and their fine children, Colin and Whitney. In addition to radiology, Phil was a renaissance man who held a wide range of interests, from French wine to rare books and coins. However, his most cherished interests were his family and friends. Although the shock of losing Phil at such an early age was profound, all of us who had the privilege to know him and call him our friend are comforted by the rich- ness of our personal memories of his warmth and humor and the recognition of all he accomplished, both personally for us as his friends and for the worldwide community of Ultrasound.
