John Michael Kilby, MD IN MEMORIAM Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same. —Flavia Weedn John Michael Kilby, Michael to his friends and colleagues, stayed with us for much too short a while. Michael, a man in his prime personally and professionally, died suddenly in his sleep. None of us has yet adjusted to such a difficult and unexpected event. Michael always had a scholarly demeanor, and it is not surprising that he ended up as an academician. He grew up in North Carolina and received his undergraduate degree from Wake Forest where he majored in English (Phi Beta Kappa). Michael received his MD degree from UNC-Chapel Hill graduating with AOA honors. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Duke and served as an Assistant Chief Resident. Michael’s specialty training in Infectious Diseases occurred at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where he focused on the pathogenesis of HIV/AIDS, with mentors Drs. Michael Saag and George Shaw.
