EDITORIAL Yoshimi Anzai, MD, MPH ead and neck cancers have traditionally been associated with high morbidity and Hmortality. In the last 10 years, overall survival rates for patients with head and neck cancers have improved, as has the quality of life. Organ preservation is more commonly achieved and being accepted as one of the major treatment strategies. The treatment decision and prognosis highly depend on the location of a primary tumor and staging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been playing an increasing role in the assessment of head and neck cancer. Precise determination of tumor extent is of utmost importance in head and neck cancer because it has important consequences for staging of disease, choice of treatment, and prediction of prognosis. Magnetic resonance imaging is superb in detecting submucosal and perineural tumor spread, skull base invasion, and nodal metastases. In addition, imaging plays an important role for surveillance after treatment to assess regional recurrence.
