REVIEW ARTICLE Hybrid Schwannoma-Perineurioma of the Gastrointestinal Tract: A Clinicopathologic Study of 2 Cases and Reappraisal of Perineurial Cells in Gastrointestinal Schwannomas Abbas Agaimy, MD* and Michal Michal, MDw (Appl Immunohistochem Mol Morphol 2011;19:454–459) Abstract: Soft tissue neoplasms with features of both schwanno- ma and perineurioma (hybrid schwannoma-perineurioma) have been increasingly recognized in recent years. To date, only a single case of this entity has been documented in the gastrointestinal enign peripheral nerve sheath tumors (BPNSTs) are tract (sigmoid colon). We herein describe 2 new cases of this Brarely found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. A entity. For comparison, we reevaluated 12 classic gastrointestinal previously reported consecutive case series constituted schwannomas for the perineurial cell component. The 2 hybrid nearly 5% of all mesenchymal GI tumors. Neoplasms schwannoma-perineuriomas were detected incidentally in the with schwannian line of differentiation (schwannoma and gastric antrum and the vermiform appendix in a 50-year-old granular cell tumor) are the most common BPNSTs 1,2 woman and a 17-year-old man during surgery for gastric GIST encountered in the GI tract. In contrast, perineurial cell and appendicitis-like symptoms, respectively. None of the patients tumors (perineuriomas) are exceptionally rare (r1%) in had neurofibromatosis 1 or 2. Patients were
