When managed effectively and nurtured with care, our workforce delivers better patient outcomes and helps to Tfulfill the organization’s mission. Leading and managing healthcare teams is both an art and a science, and it is best done by working with them and for them. My leadership approach to managing people reflects an evolutionary process, depend- JHM-D-22-00013 ing on what was most important for the workforce at various times in my career. Through- out this evolution, I have always believed that my true task was to lead more than manage. Managing is not the same as leading. As Warren Bennis, renowned organizational leader- ship scholar and author, explains, “Failing organizations are usually over-managed and under-led” (Kemp, Jr., 2000, p. 207). Workforce leadership is both an art and a science because its practice involves thoughtful consideration of what motivates coworkers and how they stay engaged in doing their best.
