ZIMBABWE: Resignation Ends Mugabe Era Following decades of authoritarian rule a military takeover leads to a shock departure.After 37 years of outmanoeuvring his political enemies, President Robert Mugabe was finally cornered on November 21st and handed in his resignation, announced at a special joint session of parliament called to discuss a motion to impeach him. Unable or unwilling to recognise that after so many years of political mastery, he had lost control of both his party and the country, he had refused to leave office during an eight‐day crisis that began when the military took over (see box). But his reign of autocratic control and brutality crumbled amid mounting pressure on the 93‐year‐old leader.A bubbling factional squabble over the presidential succession had erupted two weeks previously when Mugabe fired Emmerson Mnangagwa, formerly a key ally. The dismissal put Mugabe's wife Grace Mugabe in prime position to succeed her husband, but what turned out to be a major tactical error triggered a military takeover, his impeachment by parliament, and finally his resignation.After his sacking, it seemed as though Mnangagwa's patience finally snapped. When Mugabe dismissed him and publicly accused him of “treachery,” his supporters in the security forces intervened on his behalf.
