Harold T Meyerman in memorian* Harold T. Meryman, MD, one of the founders of the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), died of natural causes at the age of 88. Dr. Meryman was a renowned biomedical researcher, inventor, poet, and founder of the field of cryobiology and is credited for his innovative work refining the process of freezing blood allowing blood to be kept in long‐term storage. He served as president of the AATB from 1981 to 1983, and was a recipient of the Association’s prestigious George W. Hyatt Award. In addition, he also was the recipient of the American Red Cross Tiffany Award, the Kamerlingh‐Onnes Gold Medal (the Netherlands), and the Claes Hogman Lecture (Sweden). In 2000 Dr. Meryman’s interests shifted to the field of transplantation and graft rejection, he accepted a part‐time position as Research Professor in the Department of Medicine at George Washington University.
