Heart transplant surgeons DeBakey, Cooley have reconciled, ending a 40‐yr feud * One of the most famous feuds in the short history of transplantation has apparently come to an end. The New York Times has reported that Michael DeBakey, MD, and Denton Cooley, MD, have reconciled after a 40‐yr feud. The feud was fueled by Cooley commandeering an artificial heart developed by DeBakey and transplanting it into one of his own patients in 1969. Dr. DeBakey is now 99 yrs old and still affiliated with Baylor Medical College in Houston, TX. Dr. Cooley is 87 yrs old and is affiliated with St. Luke’s Hospital, where he founded the Texas Heart Institute, also in Houston, almost 50 yrs ago. “Over the years, Dr. DeBakey has called that first‐ever uses of a total artificial heart a theft, a betrayal, unethical and ‘a childish act’ to claim a medical first. Dr. Cooley defended the implant as a desperate, if ultimately unsuccessful, act to save a life.” The artificial heart was developed by Dr. DeBakey’s lab at Baylor with funds from the NHI.
