What are the requirements in the glyphosate molecule in order for it to be herbicidally active?

What are the requirements in the glyphosate molecule in order for it to be herbicidally active? An attempt has been made to determine what the requirements are for the Glyphosate molecule to be herbicidally active, and also to determine whether the optimum of biological activity has been achieved with the Glyphosate structure. In order to obtain the answers to these questions, we have segmented the Glyphosate molecule into five sections and then changed each section to determine the biological activity of each new molecule so produced. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract
