The 14 May state budget forecast a deficit of $2.7 billion, the first in fifteen years, with the government on “watch” for a further downgrade of its credit rating. Transport continued as a problem policy area and strains were apparent in the health and education sectors. Amidst the economic gloom, the Perth International Arts Festival enjoyed unprecedented success in hosting Royal de Luxe’s spectacle The Giants, which captivated Perth crowds in February. At the end of June, Newspoll had the Liberal-National government neck and neck with Labor on a two-party preferred basis, with the Greens’ vote increasing to 17 per cent. A primary vote reading of 27 per cent meant Labor’s nine-seat deficit in the fifty-nine-seat Legislative Assembly would Political Chronicles be difficult to overcome by the March 2017 election, yet Premier Barnett trailed the Opposition Leader Mark McGowan in the preferred premier and “satisfaction” ratings (Australian, 11 July http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Politics and History Wiley
