VICTORIA In a deputation t o the minister another grocers’ organisation, the grocers and storekeepers’ association, advocated that the government enact legislation similar to that in Western Australia permitting stores with two registered operatives (one of whom must be the proprietor) to sell any goods until 10.30 p.m. and similar to the South Australian legislation against undercost selling by chain stores. By-Election Early in March a by-election was held in Wollongong-Kembla to fill the seat held by Mr R. F. X. Connor (ALP) who resigned t o contest successfully the seat of Cunningham in the November federal elections. The result in the by-election was a dramatic reduction in the ALP majority in the once blue-ribbon Labor seat from more than 3,500 to 202. As the premier, Mr Heffron, had personally campaigned for Mr D. Porter, the ALP candidate, the result was regarded as a further decline in his stocks as leader. T.M. VICTORIA The pre-election session gave the parties an opportunity t o add to their images before the campaign started in earnest. As was to be expected, the parties avoided potentially vote-losing issues as best astheycould, which made it a particularly dull sitting.
