Évariste Galois and his Contemporaries EVARISTE GALOIS AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES RENE TATON The name of Evariste Galois stands as a symbol of precocious mathematical genius, misunderstood, disturbed, an object of persecution by the authorities of the time and particularly by the principal French mathematicians, who did not appreciate the depth and value of his work. In fact this work, of which the most important parts remained unpublished during the lifetime of Galois, was not published until 1846 and not fully appreciated nor properly integrated into the structure of mathematics until some twenty years later. As for the author, it was only in 1896 that the historian Paul Dupuy made the first adequately careful study of him ([9]). Since then, while the development of the theory of groups and the publication of various manuscripts of Galois have reinforced the reputation of his mathematical work, several works and a film have been devoted to the man himself which, while mixing fiction and romance with fact, have turned him into the prototype of the misunderstood and persecuted romantic hero ([2], [12]).
