The capture of the commanders lends credence to reports that disagreements have split the top rebel ranks. A senior officer of Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group has surrendered to UN peacekeepers in northern Democratic Republic of Congo . Opiyo Makasi , who was the LRA's operations and logistics commander, had been transferred to Kinshasa and handed over to the Congolese authorities. He is not, however, one of the four top LRA commanders indicted by the International Criminal Court in the Hague for crimes against humanity. ( Reuters 23/10 ) Another three senior commanders of the LRA surrendered to the Sudan People's Liberation Army ( SPLA ), lending credence to reports that there has been a major split within the ranks of the rebel group. Commanders Caesar Acellam , Kwoyelo , and Smart Okello entered the SPLA camp at Maridi having trekked for days from Garamba Forest, the northeastern DR Congo base of LRA chief Joseph Kony . Maridi is a six‐hour drive from Garamba on very bad roads.
