Abstract

Persons Seeking Sex Change Surgery are enmeshed in medically required relations with sets of caretakers, medical specialists, and mental health professionals. A heterogeneous group of individuals at the outset, transsexuals are molded by the system to conform with a stereotype expressed as a category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Ethnographic Participant‐observation and interviewing provide insight into this whole process that may have much broader implications, (gender, transsexual, stereotype, intergroup relations, diagnostic category)
