THE UPPER CARBONIFEROUS OF FERGANA AND THE QUESTION OF THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE CARBONIFEROUS AND THE PERM IAN BY BORIS LICHAREW, LENINGRAD USSR1 The study of the Upper Carboniferous has been attracting much atten- tion recently and the question as to its extent and stratigraphy has been the object of very serious discussion, but so far without any positive results. The large territory of the Soviet Union affords no doubt great possibilities for the solution of this problem. One must remember that it was in USSR where the extent of this division of the Carboniferous was for the first time estab- lished, at first by setting out the Permian system and then by the so-called Permo-Carboniferous hain above and Middle Carboniferous or Moscovian from below. Chinese geologists hñe lately contributed a great deal to our know- ledge of the Upper Palozoic of Eurasia, and have kindly afforded one of my colleagues the possibility of publishing in their geological journal a paper discussing the boundary between the Middle and Upper Carboniferous. also avail myself of their kindness and wish to make some critical remarks concerning the recently expressed opinions as to the extent of the Upper Carbonifetous, illustrating them by http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Acta Geologica Sinica (English Edition) Wiley
