THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS, I: THEOLOGICAL ORIENTATIONS

THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS, I: THEOLOGICAL ORIENTATIONS In recent years the resurrection of Jesus has been the eye in a hurricane of controversy within continental, and particularly German, theology. Although the rain of books continues, the storms seem to be abating. Perhaps the time has come to assess the ihues and the findings. Although the rain of books continues, the storms seem to be abating. Perhaps the time has come to assess the ihues and the findings. We should like to attempt a brief survey of several systematic and exegetical studies which are in a sense fruits of the controversy. Mirrored in these works, it seems to me, are some very instructive lessons on perspective and orientation in theological interpretation. It is impossible in a review survey to give either a full account or a thorough criticism of each of the works examined. Nor do we consider this expedient. Rather, it is hoped that a cumulative overview of pertinent theological contents and specific points of orientation expressed in these works will enable us to discern the direction taken in the resurrection debate and its momentary outcome. Perhaps, too, we can then, in a second article, extrapolate from these findings further avenues for research and reflection. The interest of these articles, consequently, is primarily for biblical theology and hermeneutics and not with exegetical detail. Contemporary biblical research has disclosed that
