The Pacific: Looking within the Rim While there is much psychiatric interest in the countries that make up the Rim, there has been relatively less attention paid to the nations within the Pacific Ocean. A series of reports on mental health development, focusing on the Island Nations of the South Pacific will assist in demonstrating the range of problems and solutions in this corner of the world. The Pacific Islands consist of over 20 countries and territories, dispersed over 30 million km of ocean with between 20,000 and 30,000 discrete islands. Approximately 3 million people live in the Pacific Islands, excluding the 1.4 million in Hawaii and other US territories, and the 5.2 million in Papua New Guinea. Populations vary from almost 850,000 in Fiji to under 20,000 in Norfolk Island, Palau, Tuvalu and others. The islands are grouped by ethnicity into Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. Many challenges face the region. Economic growth is slow and basic needs relating to health and education are not always met. Unique problems exist for governments attempting to provide services for populations dispersed across many small islands with limited connecting transportation.
