One consideration was that the schemes should not interfere with the passage of the Atlantic salmon up rivers and there has been much research on this economically important species both in the wild and under farmed conditions. The third section deals with ‘Pressures on the Resource’ and has seven chapters on domestic and industrial pollution, agriculture and fish farming, eutrophication, afforestation and forestry practice, acidification, river flow regulation, and management of fish populations. As can be seen from the titles, fresh waters in Scotland suffer to some extent from most of the major problems which are found worldwide. The final section is entitled ‘Integrating Conservation and Development’ and includes five chapters on pollution control, planning, nature conservation, role of environmental agencies, and integrating development and conservation. The first four are written by people involved in implementing policies to control developments that affect lakes and rivers and the final chapter is the editors’ overview. The book is basically a regional review and Scotland, being a small country on an island, does not have any really large lakes or rivers and has a relatively restricted range of species. This must limit the interest of the volume. Nevertheless, http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems Wiley
