The German Way of Jewish Emancipation

The German Way of Jewish Emancipation Footnotes 1 The literature on the Jewish question in general and the history of German Jews in particular being immense, only a few of the most important new publications can be given. Heinz Moshe Graupe, Die Entstehung des modernen Judentums. Geistesgeschichte der deutschen Juden 1650–1942 , 2nd ed. (Hamburg, 1977), provides a good survey, as does Wanda Kampmann, Deutsche und Juden. Die Geschichte der Juden in Deutschland vom Mittelalter bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges (Frankfurt, 1977). An original analysis of the problem is to be found in Abraham Leon, The Jewish question. A Marxist interpretation (Mexico, 1950). Alex Bein, Die Judenfrage. Biographie eines Weltproblems , 2 vols (Stuttgart, 1980), is highly informative and deals with the matter from a Zionist viewpoint. A good collection of essays is the pocket‐book edited by Bernd Martin and Ernst Schulin, Die Juden als Minderheit in der Geschichte (Munich, 1981). The publications and the Yearbook of the Leo Baeck Institute (London, 1956 seq.) are indispensable for the student of German‐Jewish history. See also the excellent catalogue: Juden in Preussen , edited by the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz at the occasion of the exhibition on Jews in Prussia, Dortmund, 1981. 2 A detailed account http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Australian Journal of Politics and History Wiley
