At the time, I would open my stock, undergraduates’ lecture on fisheries conservation and management with a photograph of the so-called common skate, Raja batis, and ask them to identify it. Few could do so and, consequently, none were aware that it was a vulnerable species already ‘extirpated’ from the Irish Sea (Brander, 1981), if not the English Channel, North Sea and further afield.
