Summary The bias arising from ignoring the sib‐sib correlation ρ88 in estimating the variance of a parent‐child regression coefficient is investigated algebraically and using Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the true variance can be seriously underestimated for moderate values of ρ88. Recommendations are given for removing this bias.
