The Dutch Cancer Society*

The Dutch Cancer Society* This year, 1999, will be the fiftieth anniversary of the ‘Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds’, presently known as the Dutch Cancer Society. It was established on behalf of Queen Wilhelmina (1880‐1962) after her Golden Jubilee in 1948 when she received a gift of more than 2 million guilders (905 000 euros), which she allocated to the fight against cancer. The Dutch Cancer Society has grown tremendously in the last 50 years and its income has increased to 100 million guilders per year, which is approximately 6 guilders per citizen. The net budget for 1997‐2001 is 86 million guilders per year which will be used to support scientific cancer research, education, training, information and patient support services. The Dutch Cancer Society is a private organization. The available monies have been collected by fundraising activities carried out by more than a 100 000 volunteers in 1500 departments located throughout the Netherlands. Scientific cancer research It is expected that during 1997‐2001, for each year approximately 68 million guilders will be available for cancer research; this will fund grants for fundamental and clinical research as well as psycho‐social research projects and data managment for clinical comparative research.
