The development of cancer services: reflections on a learning journey

The development of cancer services: reflections on a learning journey Introduction Reflections on personal involvement in a particular area of clinical work can be revealing. They provide the opportunity to step back and look at where we have come from, and where we might go to. They tell a story from a personal point of view, which of course has disadvantages. They can be introspective and rather self‐indulgent, and even conceited, but hopefully also provide a perspective from which to consider the developments, and the changes which have occurred. The subtitle makes it clear that this is a journey, which continues and, whose endpoint is somewhere in the future. It also makes it clear that this is a learning process in which, over the period of 25 years or so which the journey covers, learning has been a very important, both personally and professionally. This review is set out in chronological order and begins in the late 1960s and ends as the 21st Century dawns. It has been an extraordinarily rewarding journey during which I have met lots of people, made many friends, and been part of the living and dying of some of the most courageous people I have ever met, the patients. Abstract

Introduction Reflections on personal involvement in a particular area of clinical work can be revealing.
