The 12th ICAES and the Commission on Urban Anthropology

The 12th ICAES and the Commission on Urban Anthropology HIS REPORTS O N the 12th International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (ICAES), held in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, July 24-31,1988, and on the involvement and work of the Commission on Urban Anthropology as part of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences. The Commission on Urban Anthropology organized two symposia and one business meeting at the 12th Congress. One symposium was devoted to the city in socialist society; the second dealt with urban anthropology more generally. Unfortunately, not all who submitted abstracts were present to deliver their papers. For example, the delegation of urban anthropologists from the Soviet Union had to leave Zagreb early in the Congress. Its papers were distributed, however, and arrangements were made to pursue future cooperation. Kopczynska-Jaworska described the history and structure of Lodz, Poland; Creed contrasted two Bulgarian towns; and Seferagic and Popovski reported on Yugoslav cities. Ansari and Southall stressed the need for further attention to the analysis of socialist urbanism, pointing out the contradictory character of the city in a classless socialist society and the role of the state which is supposed to create a synthesis between town and countryside.
