TASMANIA D.H. J . TASMANIA A new session of parliament began on 3 March, the Legislative Council sat on 15 days and the House of Assembly on 17 days before parliament was adjourned on 21 April until 6 July. During this period in reply t o the Governor’s speech the Labor opposition attacked the government on a number of fronts. The leader of the opposition, Eric Reece forecast that the deficit for the year would be the biggest in the State’s history, that there would be employment difficulties and a running down of the building industry. He censured the government for being ‘extravagant’ and ‘a most verbose organisation‘ with no material production to support it. D. A. Lowe thought there was a ‘complete breakdown’ in the housing department, building and land costs and interest rates had risen, the minister, D. F. Clark had shown no initiative and i t was necessary to build flats as a n interim measure. Dr Foster spoke of the danger of destruction of forests by the woodchip industry. M. V. Everett attacked the government for introducing outpatient fees for workers’ compensation and third party insurance patients. D.
