The resumption of the session in February will include a continued discussion of abolition of capital punishment a new building code control of advertising. As well, the governmentâs policy speech included the controversial adult franchise and compulsory voting proposals for local government elections, pollution control and higher workmenâs compensation, and these topics will probably be raised early in 1971. TASMANIA Parliament assembled on 1 September and after sitting on 37 days adjourned on 17 December. It was not a quiet session. In debating the estimates the Labor opposition harrassed the government as much as possible and prolonged the debate for 924 hours, exceeding the record established in 1969 by 20 minutes. However, the tactics of the opposition failed to wear down the government and served only t o raise once again the question whether standing orders might well be amended to provide for a guillotine motion. The session was also marked by a series of bitter clashes between the government, or, more particularly, between Dr Nigel Abbott, the minister for health and traffic safety, and the Legislative Council, centring on amendments to the traffic bill.
