TANZANIA: Zanzibar Referendum

TANZANIA: Zanzibar Referendum The island’s stability is more assured as a government of national unity is anticipated. An overwhelming 66.4% of voters in Zanzibar are in favour of the formation of a government of national unity, official results of a referendum held on July 31st have indicated. Some 188,705 people gave an emphatic Yes in the referendum against 95,613, or 33.6% of those who voted, who gave a No, to emerge victorious in the exercise that will significantly alter the history and politics of Zanzibar. In total, 293,039 (71.9%) of the voters turned out to take part. There were 8,721 (3%) spoilt votes. The results were announced on August 1st at Bwawani centre in Zanzibar town by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) Chairman Mr Khatib Mwinyichande. By this outcome, Zanzibar will now be expected to amend its Constitution and include an article which allows the formation of a government of national unity. It is anticipated, therefore, that the government of national unity would be formed after the General Election scheduled for October 31st, which would include a President from the winning party, first vice‐president from the party that would emerge in the second position and second vice‐president from the winning party. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Africa Research Bulletin: Political, Social and Cultural Series Wiley

Abstract

The island’s stability is more assured as a government of national unity is anticipated.
