Talking about color… a religious nature. The exceptions are portraits of Sigismondo Malatesta and of Federigo da Montefeltro and his wife Battista Sforza. Among his masterpieces are “The Flagellation of Christ” in Urbino and the mural frescoes “The Story of the True Cross” in the church of San Francesco in Arezzo. The “Flagellation” is often considered to be one of the supreme achievements in painting. It is a perfect melding of all aspects of Piero’s work. An exquisitely constructed architecture with a fully realized perspective underlies a bright and marvellous coloration. Piero’s technical ability was such that he could illuminate the actual flagellation scene with an unseen artificial light the location of which can be pinpointed closely. Beyond the physical facts presented is an obvious but unknown symbolism pervading the painting. THE MATHEMATICIAN AND PAINTER Piero’s mathematical interests resulted in his becoming a master of the emerging art and science of perspective.
