Abstract

As the business continuity becomes a sine qua non condition for many companies and government institutions to operate or simply to survive, dependability modeling gains new significance because it has to meet new challenges of evolving, dynamic, and ever more complex systems . The paper that is coauthored by Kishor Trivedi, one of the most renown researchers in the field of dependability modeling, describes a classical approach to availability assessment, which is one of the key measures of commercial systems dependability in contrast to reliability that is required by most military systems and systems where even a minimal downtime may cause loss of life or huge financial losses. The authors use stochastic analytic modeling approaches to quantitatively assess availability of commercial IT‐systems. They present the entire spectrum of models ranging from non‐state‐space models to state‐space and hierarchical models. The presented practical case studies show how these modeling techniques can be used to assess system availability in practice. The paper is an excellent introduction to the world of availability modeling and clearly describes the basic modeling approaches that use reliability block diagrams, fault trees, and Markov models (e.g., continuous time Markov chain) and then a hybrid approach where, for
