Basil has just succeeded in instituting at Scott a major change in the financial measures that guide the company’s investment planning, periodic performance evaluation, and executive compensation decisions. CAROLYN BRANCATO is executive director of the Columbia Institutional Investor Project at Columbia Law School. Carolyn, who runs her own economic consulting firm called Riverside Economic Research, also recently completed work as staff director of the Competitiveness Policy Council’s study of corporate governance and financial markets. GEOFFREY COLVIN is Assistant Managing Editor of Fortune, and a member of the magazine’s Board of Editors. JUDITH DOBRZYNSKI is a senior writer at Business Week. Judy wrote the magazine’s recent cover story on “Relationship Investing” and, some time before that, the cover story on “Corporate Governance.” ALEX LEHMANN was formerly Vice President of investor relations at Whitman Corporation, and now is a consultant specializing in valuation issues.
