EDITORIAL Organic chemistry exploring the world at a molecu- authors, editorial board members and referees for their lar level remains essential for our society in the 21st great contributions to make the special issue “Asym- century. Asymmetric synthesis, particularly those em- metric Synthesis” a successful one. ploying catalytic approach, is one of the most important research fields in organic synthesis providing chiral compounds in an enantiopure form. The latter is critical since the two enantiomers of one chiral compound, in many cases, have a different response in biological sys- tems. The huge markets of non-racemic chiral com- pounds as synthetic intermediates, pharmaceuticals, materials, and many others increase the demand for their synthesis in a highly enantioselective manner. The asymmetric catalysis that a small amount of enantiopure catalyst is used to produce large amount of enantiopure desired chiral compounds is certainly one of the most promising and potentially practical methods in organic synthesis. This special issue “asymmetric synthesis” of Chinese Journal of Chemistry mainly focuses on the new development of homogeneous asymmetric catalysis. A total of 19 papers covering both transition-metal ca- talysis and organocatalysis have been published with the contributions all from the most active and world-leading chemists in the field of asymmetric catalysis.
