Abstract

Political Chronicles 637 In April, MLC Liz Behjat appealed to Attorney-General Michael Mischin to amend the state’s parole laws following a campaign by Kate Moir, who in 1986 had escaped from serial killers Catherine and David Birnie. Under Western Australia’s sentencing laws, Catherine Birnie’s strict security life sentence had been reviewed every three years since she finished serving her minimum twenty-year non-parole term in 2007. With news of Moir’s quest, thousands of supporters signed an on-line petition and joined a Facebook support group backing the attempt to deny Birnie’s release. At the same time information was made public that Catherine Birnie’s son had endured years of physical abuse and psychological pain, because of his mother’s horrific acts (Weekend West, 23-24 April 2106). Native Title On 6 June 2016, Western Australia Day, the Noongar (Koora, Nitja, Boordahawhan) (Past, Present and Future) Recognition Act 2016 was proclaimed. It recognises the Noongar people as the traditional owners of the south-west, and is said to be the largest and most comprehensive agreement to settle Aboriginal interests. In late-June Premier Barnett announced the Perpetual Trustee Company Ltd. as the first Noongar Boodja Trustee after a formal selection process undertaken by the Western Australian Government
