South Africa Election Date: Local government elections will be held on May 18th, deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe said on March 3rd. (©AFP 3/3 2011) Cape Town Mayoral Candidate: The main opposition party on March 14th announced a corruption fighting veteran politician as its mayoral candidate for Cape Town, the only major city not held by the ruling party. Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille was named after merging her small party in 2010 with the Democratic Alliance ( DA ), the biggest opposition to the ruling African National Congress ( ANC ). “There were four candidates. They were put through a gruelling process. Only one person could emerge from it. And that is Patricia de Lille,” DA leader Helen Zille told reporters in Cape Town, local agency Sapa reported. Cape Town is set to be a battleground in local government elections on May 18th, with President Jacob Zuma holding a rally in the city on May 13th. “We must take back the Cape Town metro as a first step in taking back the Western Cape in the next national election,” Sapa quoted him telling a crowd of 15,000.
