SL~DE~KOV~: Blological Analysis of Weters. Determination of the Microscopical Picture. Commentary to the Czech State Norm 75 711 (in Czech). Praha, Publishing House of Norms, 1989, p. 104, KlSs 9.- The commentary was written in respect to the amendment to the Czech State Norm Drink- -ng Water, formerly OSN 83 0611, new: OSN 75 7111. The most important feature is that the final drinking water must b3 without biota and only a limited number of iron and manganese bacteria is permitted in the living state. Remains of killed (deat) organisms are allowed only up to 50 parts per 1 ml. After an introduction the theory of the life in water is given in chapters on underground water, springs, running waters, standing waters, water-supplying reservoirs and sand-pits. The next chapter deals with the hygienioal importanoe of the water, especially with respect to maas deve- lopment of biota (water-blooms, vegetative colorings) hygienical obstecles caused by biota and problems with living organisms and viruses. The fourth chapter is devoted to the water intakes and evaluation of the biology of underground waters. The very extensive chapter 6 comprises the biology of individual technological steps in the course of the water treatment from under- ground as well as from surface (reservoirs, intake installations), recharge, filtration (slow, rapid, microscreens), coagilation, laboratory experiments to detarmine the dose of coagulants, disinfec- tion and the biology of final drinking water. Chapter 6 summarizes ths biological analytical methods for underground and surface raw water (including the trophic potential, POTASH’S test, PEARBALL’S quotient, chlorophyll deter- mination), methods for drinking water and methods for the control of the operation of water- works: bioseston, periphyton, sediments and sludges. A special chapter concerns the abioseston (=tripton). The text is concluded with a list of apparatus and utensils for the biological analysis, big lists of referencss specially for the determination and specially for quotations (in total 227 items) and with a small atlas of organisms: 9 plates of phytoplankton, 1 plate of phytobenthos, 1 for stygobionts and stygophils and 1 for abioseston. In addition, there are 7 tables and 8 figures in the text. The booklet is destined for the laboratory staff of the water-works and is written in an under- standable style. Predominantly Czech literature is quoted. V. SLLDEEER, A. SLJDEEKOVL
