A geo‐political and strategic watchdog on the Sahelo‐Saharan strip will open in 2010 in the Malian capital, Bamako, the Malian Defence Minister, Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga , said in Paris on December 23rd. “The watchdog will be used as a source of expertise and think‐tank for states of the Sahelo‐Saharan strip and of the international community,” he said in an interview with PANA . Moreover, he added, the new watchdog, which would inherit human and material resources of an already‐existing structure, intends raising funds at the international level. The Sahelo‐Saharan strip is a vast area stretching from Mauritania to Chad through Algeria , Libya , Mali and Niger and has been a hideout for trafficking and terror activities perpetrated by Al‐Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb ( AQLIM – see p. 18236) (PANA, Paris 23/12)
