Mali has called for a further 75000 troops to be trained to combat AQLIM. European Union ( EU ) and United States ( US ) officials will be invited to a meeting on security in the Sahel desert region, home to Al‐Qaeda’s north African offshoot, AQLIM (Al‐Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb) happening later in 2011, an Algerian official said May 23rd. “ Algeria has been given the task by the other Sahel countries of making contact with non‐African partners ahead of a meeting taking place in Algeria at the end of 2011,” foreign ministry spokesman Amar Belani told AFP . The meeting will deal with security issues in the Sahel and measures to develop the region’s infrastructure, he said. The trans‐Sahara route project to link the Mediterranean and the Atlantic between Algiers and Lagos ( Nigeria ), opening up a vast section of the desert, has stalled due to financing problems. A meeting opened in Bamako in Mali on May 20th between Niger , Mauritania and Algeria to discuss terrorism and transnational crime in the Sahel.
