Jim Crawley* INTRODUCTION In any form of psychotherapeutic practice, there are two broad categories of knowledge upon which the practitioner needs to be able to draw. One category of knowledge is obvious - a set of theoretical propositions about how change can be brought about, including a description of the techniques to be used by the practitioner in particular sets of circumstances. The other category of knowledge is often taken for granted - and as a consequence it is often inadequately represented in the armamentarium of practitioners. This category of knowledge concerns the functioning of the 'entity' that the practitioner is seeking to change. Thus the individual therapist needs to know about the functioning of the individual person, both as a psychobiological being and in their social and cultural milieu. The group therapist needs to know about group dynamics, as well as about techniques for intervention in groups. The family therapist needs to understand the functioning of the family system and to know something of the way in which 'family' is understood as a social phenomenon in a particular social and cultural context.
