Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation M. HUNTER, BSc, MBA, SRD, Rehabilitation Services Manager, The Royal Marsden NHS Trust, London, UK HUNTER, M. (1998) European Journal of Cancer Care 7, 85±87 Rehabilitation in cancer care: a patient-focused approach Rehabilitation plays a vital role in high quality cancer care. A multidisciplinary, patient-focused approach is the only way to achieve successful cancer rehabilitation. Keywords: cancer, rehabilitation, patient-focused care, multidisciplinary care. INTRODUCTION Patient-focused care is a much talked about concept at the moment. It is one where staff and services are organized around the identified needs of the patient and the key emphasis is on individual care needs. The concept focuses on continuity of care based on a professional model of practice in which a qualified professional is responsible and accountable for a caseload of patients for the entire duration of their care. For the nursing profession this has, over recent years, led to a change in focus from a taskcentred approach to one which is patient-centred. For most of the other health care professionals, for example, physiotherapists, dietitians, etc., a patient-focused approach has been common practice for many years. Each professional takes their own caseload of patients and is responsible for them for the entire period http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png European Journal of Cancer Care Wiley
