Rare Protests Rattle Eritrea

Rare Protests Rattle Eritrea An opposition group has urged Eritreans to revolt against the government days after activists said dozens were killed in a rare protest in the small country.Security forces arrested an unknown number of people linked to anti‐government protests in the capital, Asmara, on October 31st, in which the authorities said nobody had died.Unverified video footage, circulated on social media, showed security forces firing shots to disperse protesters who are thought to have been demonstrating against a government order compelling an Islamic school to ban the headscarf and to halt religious education. The US embassy said it received reports of gunfire in several locations while the opposition Red Sea Afar Democratic Organisation (RSADO) posted on Facebook that 28 people were killed in the protests.“The organisation also affirms that it is ready to provide all the sacrifices that would be asked of it in order to regain the dignity of the Eritrean person,” RSADO said.Eritrean state media have remained silent about the widely reported protest. Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel denied reports that people died during the unrest, dismissing it as a “small demonstration… without any casualty.”Protests are extremely rare in Eritrea and it is difficult to get objective news reports from the country. There are no private media outlets after a government crackdown on them in September 2001 and since then Eritreans have relied on opposition media based abroad, and foreign media outlets, for anything the government does not want to report. Abstract

An opposition group has urged Eritreans to revolt against the government days after activists said dozens were killed in a rare protest in the small country.Security forces arrested an unknown number of people linked to anti‐government protests in the capital, Asmara, on October 31st, in which the authorities said nobody had died.Unverified video footage, circulated on social media, showed security forces firing shots to disperse protesters who are thought to have been demonstrating against a government order compelling an Islamic school to ban the headscarf and to halt religious education.
