Poverty, wealth and place in Britain, 1968 to 2005 by D. Dorling, J. Rigby, B. Wheeler, D.... It would be remiss not to mention three drawbacks to the text. Firstly, a time lag exists between the time of the Russian interviews ‘in the late 1990s’ and the publication date of the book. The reader is left wondering how the cultural phenomenon of the Russian mailorder bride has developed over the last decade. Secondly, the Russian side of the story is based on a small sample size of 14 interviews which is further reduced by including only four in the book. Thirdly, some readers may be disturbed by the fact that two of those interviews are based on composite individuals, and even more so as the reader is never told which of the four women are created personae. Overall, the book is well-written, well documented – albeit at times too well documented – and a pleasure to read. It can be enjoyed by the lay person as it vividly portrays the cultural phenomenon of the Russian mailorder husband. It is also appropriate as a text in a college-level course, one in which the themes and issues raised in the book can be expanded, discussed and analysed more thoroughly through use of the extensive bibliography. Abstract
