Abstract

PALIEOZOIC CENTERS OF FAUNAL EVOLUTION AND DISPERSAL* B A. W. GRABATJ. In the past, fossil faunas have generally been referred to the continent in which they were first studied. Thus it has been customary to speak of EurO- pean Silurian or Devonian faunas, or of the North American fauna. This has led to the tacit assumption that these faunas were endemic in those regions, and that, if they were rediscovered elsewhere, they represented migrations from such assumed centers of origin. The study of Chinese fossil faunas and their detailed comparison with those previously known from other regions, has now thrown a flood of light on the problem of the origin of ancient marine faunas, and as the study progresses, it becomes constantly more apparent, that in Palozoic time, there existed These were:- only two main centers of faunal evolution and dispersal. The Boreal Realm i. The Indo-Pacific Realm There is very little evidence to indicate that there was an Atlantic center of dispersal in Palozoic time, and that which exists, may possibly be found Atlantic as to on further study to involve such a subordinate portion of the indicate that that water body was reduced to very limited dimensions.
