Recently, there has been a resurgence of scholarly criticisms regarding the plausibility of the Roman Catholic doctrine of the Papacy. Such criticisms have combined philosophical methods to allege that given certain theological and historical problems with the doctrine, overall the doctrine is improbable. The goal of this paper is to make the case for the Papacy, and respond to these contemporary objections. Anyone who takes Christian theism seriously ought to take the claims of the Papacy seriously. If the Papacy is indeed legitimate and the seed of Peter has continually reigned over the universal Church, then it follows that all Christians from all professions of faith belonging to the universal Church of Christ are called into communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Any claim as bold as this, especially if it be true, must be taken seriously amongst Christian traditions. For those Roman Catholics who take their faith seriously, a defense of the Papacy is of the utmost concern. If the claims on Papal authority ultimately fail to be probable, the entirety of the Roman Catholic Church – and its claims of epistemic authority on the universal Church – at best is left implausible, and at worst leaves one
