On the biology of fish sperm: workshop summary and recommendations The two and a half day workshop on the ‘Biology of Fish Sperm’ held in Vodnany (Czech Republic; 29–31 August, 2007) and organized by the Research Institute of Fish Culture and Hydrobiology (University of South Bohemia Ceské Budejovice) was attended by about 45 participants from more than 12 countries, listening to oral presentations, viewing numerous posters and discussing pertinent issues on a science field that has received little concentrated effort by experts. A wide variety of subjects was covered, ranging from basic morphology and physiology of spermatozoa to cryopreservation issues, from physiological and histological investigations to biochemical and functional quality control as well as on the needs for developing standardized protocols when using gametes in various assessment programmes. The contributions have relevance to both, reproductive work in aquaculture and in toxicity as well as environmental assessment studies. This special issue of the Journal of Applied Ichthyology contains contributions presented at the workshop which were selected after peer review. Workshop overview The workshop clearly demonstrated the progress made in recent years to better understand the general biology and functional morphology of fish spermatozoa.
