NORTHERN TERRITORY Introduction The first six months of 1985 saw further difficulties for Chief Minister Ian Tuxworth and his Country Liberal party (CLP) government. Tuxworth and his ministers had to deal with a variety of highly contentious issues, some of which were a legacy of the Everingham era and others that were previously unknown in Northern Territory politics. By June 1985 a number of political observers were considering the question of how much longer the CLP might be able to retain power under Tuxworth’s leadership. The Darwin Institute of Technology A significant problem for the government was the controversy surrounding its appointment in late 1984 of Kevin Davis, formerly Acting Chairman of the Northern Territory Housing Commission, as Director of the Darwin Institute of Technology, previously the Darwin Community College. There was widespread criticism of the appointment, which took place without any prior consultation with the Community College’s Council and before applications had closed for the advertised position of Principal. Keaction from Institute staff was hostile.
