DOUBTS EXIST OVER CAUSE OF CANCER CLUSTERS Doctor Leo Kinlen of the Cancer Research Campaign’s Epidemiology Unit at Oxford University (UK) cast has doubt on the theory that childhood cancer clusters around the Sellafield Nuclear Plant in England are caused by the chldren’s fathers having been exposed to radiation prior to the child’s conception. Doctor W e n has examined all the cases of leukaemia and non-Hodgkms lymphoma in children in the Seascale area between 1951 and 1991. Not surprisingly hls findings confirm that chlldren born in the area are at a’sigdicant risk of developing childhood cancer, but perhaps more interestingly the findmgs also indxate that there is also a greater risk of developing cancer in the children who move into the area. Clearly, these chldren’s fathers were not all exposed to ralation before their conception! Abstract

A team of researchers from the National Board of Health in Stockholm led by Hans Ekelund examined 1.4 million chldren of whom 1.1 d o n had received vitamin K as infants between 1973 and 1989, and they were able to find no association between vitamin K injection and the development of chddhood cancer. Doctor Kinlen offers no explanation of the cause
